Nutritive Milk Diet

Importance of WaterPacked with nutrition and the first ‘food’ that an infant is introduced to, milk is associated with a lot of health benefits. Milk is also known as a complete food, thanks to the numerous nutrients that it provides to the body. Calcium – the important mineral essential for healthy bones and teeth can be adequately ensured in the diet of those who take milk regularly. Milk is also one of the richest sources of protein. This is why milk and dairy products are prescribed for young children. A good milk diet during childhood promotes body growth and development of a strong skeletal system.

Besides milk in its natural form, a milk diet can comprise curd, cheese, cream, butter milk and yogurt. Milk can also be condensed and is used for preparing a number of desserts including of course the most well known milk based delicacy – ice creams. This is what makes milk diet even more interesting. Also, the people who dislike the ‘bland flavor’ of milk can develop a liking for it by using some chocolate, coffee or strawberry, mango and other fruit based flavors.

Milk is the primary source of Vitamin D – the vitamin that is essential to prevent rickets in infants. It needs to be remembered that breast milk is not rich in vitamin D and this is why newly born babies do not get it until they are introduced to milk and milk diet during the weaning period. However, in the early months of birth breast feeding is very important as it is the best insurance against iron deficiency in babies and iron cannot be supplied through cow’s milk and milk diet. Milk based products should be introduced slowly as the baby’s digestive system becomes stronger and a good nutrition can be ensured for him/her through suitable foods.

Inadequate milk diet that results in Vitamin D deficiency can also be harmful for adults. Osteomalacia is a bone thinning disorder that occurs in adults and is characterized by proximal muscle weakness and bone fragility. The impact of osteomalacia can cause chronic musculoskeletal pain. This is why it is important to derive adequate Vitamin D and calcium through milk and dairy products. A milk diet can provide these nutrients to especially to vegetarians who do not even take eggs.

Even though milk is ‘complete food’ and a proper milk diet can supply numerous important nutrients, milk based products should not be the most dominating parts of daily diet. Excess consumption of milk can interfere with the absorption of iron in body and high intake of products like cheese and cream amount to unhealthy calories. Also, children and teenagers who consume cheese burgers, cheese laden pizzas or creamy desserts on pretext of being on a ‘milk diet’ should be checked for such unhealthy food habits.

Milk and dairy products are packed with nutrition but for all age groups a milk diet also needs to be balanced with a diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, cereals, and legumes. This is essential for supply of different minerals and vitamins as also for a tasteful combination of daily meals.
